Danceworks’ upcoming performance blends nature with art
“Biome” on stage February 29 – March 3
GREENFIELD AVENUE. COME IN TODAY. WELCOME BACK. 822. NOW THIS MORNING ON ARTS AVENUE, A SNEAK PEEK INTO DANCEWORKS UPCOMING PERFORMANCE. THE REHEARSAL VIDEO RIGHT HERE. THAT YOU’RE SEEING IS FOR A CONCERT THAT IS COMING QUICKLY. AND JOINING ME LIVE IN STUDIO THIS MORNING, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF BIOME, GINA LORENZI. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. TELL ME ABOUT THIS SHOW. IT’S CALLED BIOME. TELL ME WHERE THE NAME CAME FROM AND AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT. YEAH, SURE. WELL, THIS CONCERT IS REALLY MY ODE TO THE OCEAN IS HOW I LIKE TO DESCRIBE IT. UM, WE REALLY CREATED AN UNDERWATER WORLD. THE DANCERS. TAKE ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CREATURES, OF VARIOUS CREATURES, OF MARINE ECOSYSTEMS, HENCE THE NAME BIOME. AND, UM, WE’RE REALLY BRINGING THEM TO LIFE IN THE STUDIO SPACE. THEY SORT OF DANCE THESE CREATURES TO LIFE THROUGHOUT THE PERFORMANCE AND EBB AND FLOW TO OUR OWN VARIATIONS OF THEM, AND AND YES, IT REALLY CAME ABOUT BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE EMOTION OF WONDER AND EXPERIENCES OF AWE IN CONJUNCTION WITH MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES SCUBA DIVING, AND I REALLY WAS INTERESTED IN BRINGING THAT COMBINATION TOGETHER WITH DANCE. SO IT SOUNDS AWESOME. IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE. THIS IS SORT OF YOUR THIS IS YOUR THESIS. A LOT OF RESEARCH BEHIND IT CAN YOU TELL US WHAT THAT RESEARCH WAS LIKE AND AND HOW MAYBE SOMEONE IN THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE THAT ON STAGE? YEAH. SO SO IN A WAY IT’S ABOUT BRINGING MY EXPERIENCE. I NOTICED THE WONDER AND ALL THAT I FEEL DIVING AND HOW IT SORT OF CHANGED MY OUTLOOK AND APPRECIATION FOR THE OCEAN. SO I’M INTERESTED IN BRINGING THAT EXPERIENCE TO OTHERS. AND THEN ALSO IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF, UM, ARTIVISM IF YOU ALL WILL, OR ACTIVISM WITHIN THE CONCERT IN THAT WE DRAW THEM IN AND WE WANT THEM TO FALL INTO THIS WONDROUS WORLD WE’VE CREATED. BUT AS THE PERFORMANCE ROLLS ALONG, THEY START TO DO. WE START TO INTRODUCE ISSUES THAT THE OCEAN FACES AND THE AUDIENCE IS ASKED TO CONSIDER THE HUMAN IMPACT ON THE OCEAN. AND PERHAPS, PERHAPS REFLECT UPON THEIR OWN ACTIONS AND IMPACT ON THE NATURAL WORLD. AND AS THAT KIND OF UNFOLDS, MAYBE THERE’S A DIFFERENT CONSIDERATION THAT THEY TOO, START TO HAVE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IN GENERAL. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT THE COMBINATION OF WITH THE PEOPLE ON STAGE, A MILWAUKEE COMPOSER AS WELL. UM, YEAH. HOW DID YOU GET LINKED UP WITH WITH THIS GROUP TO THEN SHARE YOUR THESIS AS ON STAGE? YEAH. SO I’VE BEEN A COMPANY MEMBER WITH DANCEWORKS PERFORMANCE MILWAUKEE SINCE 2013. UM, AND AS THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF THIS PERFORMANCE, I AM JUST DELIGHTED THAT CRYSTAL WAGNER, THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, WE HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP. AND SHE HAD HEARD ABOUT MY PLAN FOR THE THESIS. AND THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A COOL CONCERT TO SET ON THE COMPANY. SO THAT’S KIND OF HOW THAT UNFOLDED. SO THE CONCERT FEATURES 13 FABULOUS DANCERS OF THE COMPANY AND THE MILWAUKEE BASED MUSICIAN AND COMPOSER ALAN RUSSELL, WHO WILL ACTUALLY BE PERFORMING LIVE, ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS FOR VIOLIN AND ELECTRONICS. AND ALAN AND I HAVE WORKED TOGETHER ON MANY PROJECTS FOR DANCEWORKS AND ON OUR OWN PRIVATELY OVER THE YEARS. LET’S TALK LOGISTICS HERE. IT’S FEBRUARY 29TH IS WHEN IT OPENS. HOW CAN I GET TICKETS? YEAH, SO BY VISITING THE WEBSITE AT DANCEWORKS MK. ORG OR CALLING THE DANCEWORKS. BOX OFFICE WHICH IS 4014277 8480. THAT NUMBER MEMORIZED IN YOUR HEAD. THAT’S PRETTY GOOD. THAT IS PRETTY GOOD. UH, IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE. AND WE THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR RESEARCH AND ON STAGE, BUT ALSO SHARING IT WITH US IN THE STUDIO. WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT. AND I KNOW IT’S, UH, WHAT, TWO WEEKS AWAY. SO GOOD LUCK. TWO WEEKS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. REALLY APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE. SHOW RUNS FROM AGAIN FEBRUARY 29TH THROUGH MARCH 3RD. WE HAVE A LINK F
