In the European Parliament, for the past five years, far-right nationalist parties – the Rassemblement National (RN) in France and its allies, such as the AfD in Germany and the League in Italy – have been voting against all legislation enabling us to take action against climate change. This strategy of systematic obstruction must, of course, be condemned from an environmental perspective. But it must also be denounced because it is totally at odds with issues on which the nationalists claim to be taking action, such as migration, radical Islam, or our energy and industrial sovereignty.
Far-right nationalists want to fight migration? Since 2008, 22.5 million people have been forced to leave their homes because of climate disasters, estimates the United Nations Refugee Agency. By 2050, 216 million people could be displaced worldwide, according to the World Bank. These displacements are expected to take place within the countries concerned. But who can imagine that such movements of people would be without consequences for us?
Opposing climate action is in direct contradiction with the will to control forced migratory flows because the first condition for not needing to migrate is being able to live with dignity in one’s own country. Opposing climate action obviously means increasing the number of potential climate migrants. In the name of the values they are supposed to represent, far-right parties should logically be the first to want to take action for the climate!
Far-right nationalists want to fight radical Islam? By opposing the reduction of our dependence on gas and oil, for example, and voting against all legislation on the development of renewable energies or the electrification of mobility, far-right nationalist parties are de facto the useful idiots of the fossil fuel powers. Foremost among these are certain Gulf states, whose connections with the financing of radical Islamist organizations are well established. Where would these countries be without the colossal sums we transfer to them every year to buy their oil and gas?
Energy subservience
Far-right nationalists claim to be fighting for our industrial sovereignty and the defense of our jobs? Logically, they should be the first to fight for energy produced in Europe. But they’re doing exactly the opposite! Draft after draft, they are organizing our energy subservience. Their defense of Putin’s Russia before the war – and their passive complicity since – is an example we need to bear in mind every day. Nationalist parties have opposed financial support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and our strategy of independence from Russian gas. They are the Kremlin’s party, playing against our economic and geopolitical interests, our sovereignty, and our independence.
