Northern Territory Labor MP questions funding for the Environmental Defenders Office

Northern Territory Labor MP Luke Gosling says he will raise the issue of funding for the Environmental Defenders Office with Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek.

The proposed move follows a ruling by the Federal Court earlier this month where they rejected an application in a case run by the Environmental Defenders Office on behalf of traditional owners from the Tiwi Islands.

The EDO wanted to prevent Santos lying a gas pipeline off the coast as it was argued it would damage the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Tiwi people.

The ruling rejected the claim however.

Justice Natalie Charlesworth found lawyers from the Environmental Defenders Office distorted and manipulated the views of Indigenous people from the Tiwi Islands in order to make their case.
