Renowned Queens artist Helaine Soller has a new exhibit in Long Island City featuring a series of paintings she has been working on for years.
“Nature’s Muse: Paintings of Water Plant Ecosystems” is being displayed at the Back Wall Gallery at Studio 41. It is curated by Nancy Gesimondo and Dianne Martin and is Soller’s 27th solo show.
The organizers note in a press release that Soller, a Bayside resident, is an environmental artist whose “multidisciplinary career includes painting, drawing, photography, curation and education.”
The exhibit features works that Soller said can be a metaphor for the cycles of life and reflect multicultural connections, such as by featuring the lotus, a revered flower in Asia. The brushstrokes are made often in earthtones but also brighter colors, such as a rich, deep blue for some waters, including in the key painting “Nature’s Melody.”
“By emphasizing the beauty and drama of natural forms, and interpreting environments unfolding at a moment in time Soller alerts us to nature in everyday environments and connects ancient cultural symbols to contemporary society,” the organizers say in a press release.
The gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. and is located at 27-15 41 Ave. “Nature’s Muse” will be on display through May 26. Soller herself will be at the gallery for special events from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 12; 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26.
